Anxiety isn’t just something you think. It’s something your body feels. When your nervous system becomes overwhelmed, your body can shift into a state of fight, flight, or freeze, even when you are safe.
You may notice:
Racing thoughts
Tightness in your chest
Restlessness or irritability
Feeling constantly on edge
Your body is not broken—it is trying to protect you.
Healing begins when we learn how to gently guide the body back to a place of safety and balance.
Understanding Nervous System Regulation
Nervous system regulation is the ability to move out of a stress response and return to a calm, grounded state. Instead of forcing yourself to relax, you teach your body: “I am safe. I can slow down.” This happens through body-based (somatic) practices—not just thinking differently.
A Simple Regulation Practice
Try this grounding and breathing exercise:
Orient to Safety
Look around your environment slowly and remind yourself:
“I am safe right now.”
Ground Your Senses
5 things you can see
4 things you can feel
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
Slow Your Breath
Inhale for 4 seconds
Hold for 2 seconds
Exhale for 6 seconds
Repeat for a few minutes. The longer exhale helps your nervous system settle and relax.
